[ Natasha is just going to wait until Sam's out and she and Barnes are alone in their room to strike, but then she also knows none of them are the best sleepers, so she also has to wait for Barnes to wake up.
It's fine. Natasha is patient, so when Bucky wakes up, Natasha is lying on her bed playing with a small knife and listening for the sound of his breath changing. ]
[It's no different to any other day. Barely a couple of hours in and Bucky's jolting awake with an almost silent gasp of air. After three months of sharing the same living space though, he's long since given up on making sure that he doesn't wake any of the others up. It's an unwritten rule that they don't bother each other about it.
Except, none of them seem to be particularly good at sticking to the rules, it seems.]
If you're planning on paying me back for shooting you, could you at least wait till I brush my teeth first?
[ She pauses with the knife balancing on her finger precariously for just a moment before it tips to the side and she catches it by the handle. ]
You think I was waiting for you to wake up so I could stab you?
[ An eyeroll and then she turns onto her side to face him. ]
Jesus, Barnes, we've been sleeping in the same room for months. If I was going to stab you, you'd be stabbed already.
[ Which isn't a denial that she remembers being shot, but she knows it wasn't him behind the wheel and he's hardly the only person in her life who's done things she won't ever hold against him in a real way. ]
Coulda just been waiting till Sam was out the room. No witnesses.
[Not that he's being particularly serious about it. At the end of the day, she's right. She's had ample enough opportunities already. And given the way she'd switched sides at the airport, had thrown in Steve- Because is was Steve who earned that loyalty. Not him. -she isn't about to change her mind now.
Hopefully.
So Bucky just rubs a hand down his face, taking a moment to clear his thoughts. There's clearly a reason she's waited for him, and he isn't about to just brush that off.]
[ Her face turns more serious at the question. She's spent so much of her life being duplicitous by nature that being straight forward has only started to feel normal in the last few years of her life and even then, only really around a handful of people.
She and Barnes are still getting used to each other, but they have a lot of people in common. It counts for a lot and very little at the same time, but she's starting to see what Steve had seen in him and what Sam sees now. The saltiness is really just on the outside, isn't it? She can work with that. She's Russian. ]
[The answer is easy to give, because it's a simple truth. From the moment he was back in his own mind again- Back under his own control, at least -he'd known that Sam's presence on their team was a risk. Not because the guy couldn't protect himself. But rather because a couple of tours and a set of wings doesn't mean much when you're up against people who can kill you with a snap of their fingers.
Sam's entirely human, and yet he doesn't let that keep him from facing supersoldiers head on. From taking point against an army of aliens hellbent on wiping out half of humanity for a second time.
He's fearless. And that is terrifying.]
He's as bad as Steve. 'cept he doesn't have the serum to back him up.
[Instead, it's a pair of former assassins. But at the end of the day, they're still only human.]
